Jon Gnarr, mayor of Reykjavik capital
In 2009 Jón Gnarr (Jón Gnarr Kristinsson) formed the Best Party, with some other people with more and less no background in politics, including Einar Örn Benediktsson formerly with the Sugarcubes (the band Bjork played in before going solo). The Best Party, which is a satirical party that parodies Icelandic politics and wants to make the life of the citizens more fun, was able to win the 2010 municipal elections in Reykjavík, with the party gaining 6 out of 15 seats on the City Council (34.7 percent of the vote).
Jon Gnarr political program includes “all kinds of things for weaklings, free towels in all swimming pools, Disneyland in the Vatnsmýri area, a polar bear for the Reykjavík zoo, sustainable transparency, a drug-free parliament by 2020, to do away with all debt, and finally a free access to Hljómskálagarðurinn (amusement park). Upon being voted, Jón Gnarr Kristinsson announced that he would not enter a coalition government with any party that had not watched fabled HBO series The Wire.
After he became mayor of Reykjavík, it was proposed that Reykavik city be nicknamed Gnarrenburg, the title of an earlier radio show featuring himself. As Mayor, Jón Gnarr has been a source of great entertainment and shock by e.g. appearing at the 2010 Gay Pride parade as a beautiful drag queen, posting a video holiday greeting wearing a Darth Vader mask and a Santa Claus cap. and proposing a merger with close by municipality Kopavogur. Jon Gnarr, mayor of Reykjavik was formerly a taxi driver.
Jon Gnarr famously starred in the Night Shift sitcom now shown on BBC in UK prior to becoming mayor of Reykjavik.
